The discovery framework
The WELLS Discovery Framework
The WELLS Discovery Framework is a client-centered discovery framework that helps coaches move beyond surface-level questions and understand what is really happening for a prospect. It guides the conversation from witnessing the prospect's experience through deeper exploration, impact, future vision, and ultimately a clear choice.

What are the five stages of WELLS?
- W
Witness
Hear what the prospect is actually experiencing. Before you diagnose anything, let them describe their situation in their own words and show them you heard it.
Example questions
- “Tell me what's been happening with your calls lately.”
- “What made you book this conversation now?”
- “Where does it feel like things are getting stuck?”
- E
Explore
Go deeper into what is happening rather than accepting the first surface-level answer. The first answer is usually the polished one; the second is where the truth starts.
Example questions
- “Say more about that.”
- “What have you already tried, and what happened?”
- “When you say the calls fall flat, what does that sound like?”
- L
Link
Help the prospect connect the problem to its impact, cost, consequence, or importance. This is where a situation becomes a reason to act.
Example questions
- “What has this cost you over the past six months?”
- “How is that showing up outside of your business?”
- “What happens if nothing changes between now and next year?”
- L
Look Ahead
Explore what they want to change, create, experience, or have happen instead. A clear picture of the outcome gives the decision something to stand on.
Example questions
- “What would you want your calls to look like instead?”
- “If this were working, what would be different for you?”
- “What does success look like six months from now?”
- S
Step Into Choice
Help the prospect move toward a clear decision based on what they just uncovered — not on urgency, pressure, or a persuasive close.
Example questions
- “Based on everything you've said, what do you want to do about it?”
- “Is there anything still unresolved for you?”
- “What would need to be true for you to move forward?”
Weak questions vs. stronger questions
Surface level
“So, what are your goals?”
Stronger
“What's happening right now that made you want to change something?”
Surface level
“Do you want more clients?”
Stronger
“How many calls are you taking a month, and what's happening on them?”
Surface level
“Is budget going to be an issue?”
Stronger
“What kind of investment were you expecting for work like this?”
Surface level
“Does that make sense?”
Stronger
“What part of that feels most relevant to what you're dealing with?”
Surface level
“Are you ready to get started?”
Stronger
“Based on what you've told me, what do you want to do next?”
Why does deeper discovery matter?
Because a prospect can only decide as clearly as they understand their own situation. When the problem, the impact, and the desired change are vague, the answer is vague too — “I need to think about it.” Depth is not interrogation; it is respect for a decision that costs them money.
